BACKGROUND

This piece is intended as a way to honour the depth of the gaping hole left following miscarriage, pregnancy loss or the loss of a child, and to acknowledge the weight of everything that may be wrapped up in this complicated type of loss.

My hope is that this print can give form to the enormity of these often unseen and unspoken about experiences, and offer something physical that can be used to commemorate what has happened, the life that has been lost, in a meaningful, healing way.

‘Beyond Loss’ is also a tribute to the profound love and support needed to get through such impossible things. It is an acknowledgement of the ‘it takes a village’ mentality and the power of healing together; it takes a village to raise a child, and it takes a village to grieve the loss of one.

This print was originally commissioned by Ultimo Press for the cover of ‘Hard to Bear’, a book investigating the science and silence of miscarriage by Isabelle Oderberg. You can read more about Isabelle’s inspiring work here.

+ Printing Method

Each print is individually pressed from a hand-carved lino block using the traditional burnishing method. The manual printing process enables texture to be incorporated into the design in a unique way, celebrating the handmade nature of traditional techniques.
